What Is Wrong With the World


Main Scripture: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Phil 4:8 (NIV)

Culture has led us to believe that we should focus on what is wrong and not what is right, as such we often take this approach with our children, our spouses and even the world. Today, I am encouraging you to change your approach, instead of focusing on what is wrong about your job, your relationship, your children etc., focus on the positive. As the scripture above encourages us, let us focus on what is excellent or praiseworthy in ourselves and others, instead of focusing on the things that are not.

My nine year old niece had some difficulties at school, she wasn’t doing very well as she is not as fast as the other children in her class. The teachers often focused on this and as such she was not confident and often gets low grades. It got to a point where the teacher punished her because she was not doing well; this caused my niece to become fearful and consistently did very bad at school.

As such, my sister decided to change the school, at this new school the teachers did not focus on her weaknesses but focused on her strengths, the teacher consistently tells my niece how bright she is and whenever she did well focused on that instead. This has resulted in an increased confidence level and much better grades. Instead of being fearful of doing homework and going to school, my niece now explains the math problems to my sister, is very sociable at school and gets much better grades.

This is just one example of how focusing on strengths instead of weaknesses can change a situation. Studies have shown that persons are more productive when we focus on their strengths instead of their weaknesses. Ladies, instead of beating up yourself about the things that you have done wrong, reward yourselves for what you have done right while working on the weaknesses. Instead of arguing with your husband about what he has done wrong, praise him for what he has done right, this will cause him to want to do the fix the other things. Everyone loves to be praised.

Father, help us to focus on our strengths instead of our weaknesses. Teach us to count our blessings instead of focusing on what we don’t have. Help us to focus on the things that are excellent and praiseworthy in our lives and others instead of focusing on the things that are not.
