Peace

This hymn was written after traumatic events in hymnist Horation Spafford’s life. The first was the 1871 Great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago which was decimated by the great fire). His business interests were further hit by the economic downturn of 1873 at which time he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre. In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone . . .". Most of us might be going through some hard times with school reopening, the economic times being so hard, loved ones dying, the looming war in Syria, it truly a difficult time to live and not be depressed, sad or worried over something. However, we are assured by the words of the Bible that God will give us peace during these times of trials and sorrows (John 16:33). Just like he inspired Stafford when he was going through a period of hard time, so too will he comfort us and give us peace. Here are some scriptures of reassurance:

·         The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace. Psalms 29:11
·         Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble Psalms 119:165
·          You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3
·         LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. Isaiah 26:12
·         Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27
·         Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil:4:6-7

Ladies today I encourage you to focus and meditate on the words of this song as well as these scriptures. Pray and ask God to give you his peace. If you magnify God in these times your problems will become minute. May the Prince of Peace give you peace in your times of sorrow.

Dream

Today, August 28, 2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Rev Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech. He delivered this speech to more than 200,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln memorial on August 28, 1963.

Martin Luther King had a dream of equality, freedom and justice for all Negroes in America. Today we can say that his dream is a reality, today people of all races  pray together,  struggle together, go to jail together and stand up for freedom together.

Ladies do you have a dream? Today my encouragement to you is to dream, dream and dream big. While you dream however, here are some steps to making your dream a reality.

·         Ensure that your dream is in line with the will of the Almighty – Pray and ask God if your dream is his will for your life. If it is He will make a way even in the desert places. He will open doors of opportunities for you that you did not even know were possible.

·         Believe in your dream – people will want to discourage you but as long as you know that your dream is in the will of God believe in it

·         Get the support of others – Martin Luther King told his dream to over 200,000 people who also bought into it and helped him to fight to make this dream of reality. Once you believe in your dream you can sell it to anyone.

·         Be passionate about your dream – your passion will motivate you to press on even when  the obstacles and trials come during the pursuit of your dreams

·         Do not settle for less than your dream – If God sanctions your dream it can happen, there is nothing impossible with God. If you gave you that dream it will come through no matter what it takes.

·         Never stop praying – start with prayer, end with prayer. Always keep God in the loop, He is your source, He is your provider, He is your strong tower, your friend and your deliverer. He will never leave you so ensure you always check in with him.

Lord Jesus, we thank you for giving us dreams and hopes, we pray today that you will lead and direct us as we give our dreams and future to you. Open doors of opportunities for us, close the doors that need to be closed. Send persons to sew into our lives and future to make our dreams a reality. Be an Example for Others


Main Scripture:  But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others with a weaker conscience to stumble. For if others see you—with your “superior knowledge”—eating in the temple of an idol, won’t they be encouraged to violate their conscience by eating food that has been offered to an idol? So because of your superior knowledge, a weak believer for whom Christ died will be destroyed. And when you sin against other believers by encouraging them to do something they believe is wrong, you are sinning against Christ. 1 Cor 8:9-12 (NLT)

Every day, every second we are being watched by someone whether it’s by our children, our coworkers, our neighbours but most importantly by God. We are being watched by persons who have an expectation of us; most times these are persons who wish to imitate us. These persons expect us to have a positive influence on them.

As adults and Christians we have a responsibility to ensure that we live as an example for those who are watching us. We are expected to be pace setters for those who have less knowledge and experience than us. Our lives ought to be a guide for those who follow us. How many times have you heard your child make a comment or observed something that they were doing, when you get ready to scold them you realize that you did or said the same exact thing a few days before? Have you ever had someone come to you and express how much they admire and want to be like you?
Ladies, these are the reasons why today’s scripture is seeking to reinforce the importance of living as an example for others to follow. The fact is those who look to us are normally looking for someone to model, our children are usually “mini me(s)” and if we cause them to fail because we did not do what is right we have Christ himself to answer to.

It is not enough to live by the saying “do what I say and not as I do”, we also need to do what we say. There is an old Chinese proverb that says “personal example carries more weight than preaching.”

So ladies today live your life in a way so that others emulate you. As Christians and adults we have a responsibility for the lives of others.

Father, we pray today that you will help us to live knowing that we are being watched, not just by others but by you. Help us to be an imitator of you so that others will imitate us. Help us to be a positive influence in the lives of those we lead. We pray that you will be glorified through us.

Neither Give Place To The Devil


Main Scripture:  Neither give place to the devil. Eph 4:27 (KJV)

Do you feel as if something as stolen your joy? Are you unable to find peace? Are you miserable and empty at times? Do you feel as if you cannot even talk to God because you are not worthy?

All this can be as a result of giving the devil an opportunity to work in your life. Ladies do not be mistaken, the devil is not your friend, he does not want you to succeed at anything. John 10:10 tells us that the purpose of the thief is the kill, steal and destroy and 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us that the devil is our enemy and he is as a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Therefore we should not be surprised when we have all kinds of troubles and temptations; it is the work of the devil.

When we give him the opportunity to work in our lives, he will not stop until he kills us. He will come so subtle disguising himself as the angel of light (2 Cor 11:14). He will bring the solution to your problems in a nice little package, making it seem as if it’s God’s answer to your problems and even though you know it is not you take the package and decide you will keep it for just a little while, then you open its contents start using them until you are so far gone you have lost your peace and your joy and you find it hard to talk to God because you are feeling unworthy. What is even worst you cannot tell anyone because you should have known better.

Fortunately for us, it is never too late. My Pastor once told me to “back up the truck.” Ladies no matter how far you have allowed the devil to lead you it is not too late to take charge of the steering wheel and “back up the truck.” Unlike the devil, Jesus is our friend, He is the true Shepherd and His purpose is to ensure that we have a full and satisfying life (John10:10), not a life that is full of guilt, unhappiness and regrets. John 10:9 says that “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”  In order for this to happen however we have a part to play:

·         Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
·         Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16
·         Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil Eph 6:11

Ladies do not allow the devil to steal your peace or joy, too great a price was paid on Calvary to procure them for you.

Father, we thank you for paying such a price for our sins, we are grateful that you are our friend and that you are always looking out for us. Forgive us of our sins today; forgive us for allowing the devil to lead us astray. Father we pray today that you will strengthen us and that you will remove every guilt and feeling of unworthiness even now. Lord we submit ourselves to you and we pray that you will restore us and keep us sober and vigilant so we will be able to resist the devil.

HELP


Main Scripture:  Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Eccl 4:9-12

A story is told of a man who was drowning and instead of crying out for help so the persons on beach could hear him, he quietly said “assistance please, assistance please.” No one heard so he drowned.

As women, especially women who are determined to be successful we often times become too proud to ask for help. However, King Solomon in his wisdom reminds us today of the benefits of two person working together instead of working alone. He reminds us that there is strength in numbers and it easier for us to fail when we work alone.

The Lord has placed people in our lives so that they can help us. If today you are having a challenge whether it is in your marriage, at work or even in your spiritual life, don’t be afraid of shouting for help. The bible tells us further in Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” It therefore means then that it is good to ask for help.

Here are some quotes about the benefits of working together, ponder on these today before you decide that you are going to deal with your challenges by yourself:

P.U.S.H

Have you ever been in a situation where your back is against the wall and all you want to do is run? You wish you were a bird so you can fly away from your troubles as they seem not to be moving no matter what you try.

This is the situation Jacob was in. He stole his brother Esau’s birthright and now He heard that he was on His way to meet him with 400 men. Jacob taught Esau was coming to kill him, he was terrified. Jacob tried deal with the issue by appeasing his brother with gifts so that he would not kill Him. However no matter what Jacob did, his brother was adamant about coming to see him. Jacob was ready to run.

This is not what God wanted however, he wanted to use the situation to change Jacob as he was always running away from his problems or tried to trick his way out of them. God wanted Jacob to trust him to deal with this one. As such He sent an angel to prevent him from running away. The angel broke contended with him for the whole night and broke his hip so he had no choice but to pray all night. He had to P.U.S.H – Pray Until Something Happened.  After he prayed God brought the change that was necessary for him to overcome his fear and his ways of being a trickster.

Ladies sometimes when obstacles come in our path refuse to move, it is God’s way of showing us that He is able to move them for us and that we should trust him. Sometimes these troubles come to build us, to make us stronger or prepare us for another level in this life. The analogy below sums it up. Sometimes all we are required to do is P.U.S.H.
A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might.

This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing it with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore, and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.

Noticing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, the adversary decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man’s weary mind. “You have been pushing against this rock for a long time, and it hasn’t budged. Why kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it.” Thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These troubling thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man. “Why kill myself over this?” I’ll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort and that will be good enough.

And that is what he planned to do until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his thoughts to the Lord. “Lord” he said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even been able to budge that rock. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”

The Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, When I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so?”

“Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in my wisdom. This you have done. I, my friend, will now move the rock. Story : Push against the Rock 

Ladies do not despise or try to hurry the process God is taking you through, just put your trust in Him and allow Him to perfect you.

Oh Lord we thank you for the process, we thank for the lessons that we learn from this particular problem that is in our way. Lord we pray that you will strengthen us direct our path. Increase our faith in you so that we will trust you. Lord sometimes we tend to trust our own heart and understanding but today we will pray and wait on you to remove our obstacles. In you we put trust as we wait on you.

You are Resilient

“Resilience is the ability to find the inner strength to bounce back from a set-back or challenge”

Ladies this morning I want to remind you that you are resilient. The Lord is our strength and He is faithful to take us through hard times and trials.

How To Be Resilient in Hard Times:

1. Have faith in God – David, a man who understood hard times was a man of resilience. Though his enemies tried to slay him, though he had to run and hide He had faith in God. David leaned on God and look to him for wisdom and direction. During his time of trials He described God as his strength, his song (defense), his salvation, his light, his rock, his fortress, his deliverer etc. Like David, have faith in God; allow Him to take you through the trials that you are going through. There is a little song that says "faith in God can move a mighty mountain, faith in God can calm a trouble sea, faith in God can make a desert like a fountain, faith can bring the victory"

2. Embrace change - Charles Darwin once observed that “it’s not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change." Sometimes if we are able to accept that change is the only constant in life we would not be so stressed. The apostle Paul once told us that He has learned to be content in whatever the circumstances (Phil 4:11-13). Understand that some change is inevitable and you are not always going to see the good in the beginning; however ask God to give you His peace so that you can be content.

3. Look for opportunities in your disappointments - Your boss might have told you that He is cutting down your days because of the economic crises, this could be the opportunity to start your own business or to volunteer so that you can gain experience for your new career.  Winston Churchill reminds us that “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

4. Remain positive - Maintain a positive attitude no matter what comes your way. Once you have a vision, keep your eye on in, be determined to win. Tell yourself that you are in it to win it.

5. Laugh it off – “Laughter is the best medicine” is an old saying but it is always good to laugh even when you are going through hard times. Also learn to laugh at yourself; taking life too seriously will only make the situation worst.

6. Get rid of the negative forces - Get rid of the gossipers and naysayers. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and will point you in the right direction.

Lord Jesus thank you for being our strength, thank you for being our rock, our strong tower, our defense and our fortress. Father as we embark on today we pray that you will lead us and guide us, cause us to be resilient although challenges might come our way. Lord we pray that you will show us the doors that open when one closes, help us to be positive and remove every negative force from our lives.

Consider Your Ways

Lying deep within each of us is purpose, something that God has placed in us that needs to be fulfilled. All our talents, resources, knowledge and experiences were given to us by God so that purpose can be fulfilled.  Many of us however are caught in the trap of just living, living aimlessly without ever knowing why we were placed on this earth.

On the other hand some are aware of our purpose however we live up to the expectations, demands and pressures of family, friends, employers, clubs, churches and school. In doing this however, there is a void, a lack of satisfaction. In your heart you know that there is more to you than this, you know that God has a higher calling and purpose for you. You took the job, networked, did the degree because it would be a stepping stone to fulfilling your purpose however you have become complacent. You are comfortable, further it is too much risk if you leave now and God is using you here anyway. All good excuses but the void remains and satisfaction never come.

It was the same with the Jews in the book of Haggai. God gave them an assignment to finish the temple; instead they focused on other priorities and did not get the task done. As such the Lord told them to consider their ways; everything else that they did was not fruitful because they did not do what God gave them to do.

Today you might be discouraged, dissatisfied or depressed despite having a "great" life. That's because God's plan is not being fulfilled in your life. Ladies I implore you know thyself, consider your ways. Return to God’s original design for you, the task might seem daunting, you may have had many disappointments on the journey but remember that God's resources are infinite and he will provide the encouragement and resources you need to get the job done.

Condemned

Today’s reading refers to Jesus Christ, the Jews plotted, schemed and put Christ to death because He did things that they perceived wrong or things they did not agree with. They condemned Him and eventually killed Him.
In many respects we are like the Jews, many times before we even find out the full story we do not hesitate to condemn and pass judgment. Some of us will even cast the stone to kill given the right circumstances.

The fact is sometimes if we stop to find out, we will find that the ones we are condemning are being unjustly condemned. In Jesus’ case the Jews cried “kill him, kill him” because a very good case was made by the leading priests, however, they did not give Him a trial so that he could defend himself. Verse 10 of Isaiah 53 tells us however, that “it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief.”  As a result of Christ dying on the cross we have access to eternal life, He gave His life as an offering for sin so that many can be counted as righteous.

For those of us who find ourselves on the side of condemnation; remember that the Lord has a good plan for all of us. What you are going through is nothing new to Him and this thing that seem so horrible now will make you stronger in the end. It will build your character and work out in your favour.
If you are quick to condemn, ask God to help you to change, remember that “words kill” and the one you kill may just be your own.

Oh Lord, our heavenly Father, the one that sits high and look low, we thank you for mercifully saving us from our sins even though you were unjustly condemned. Lord teach us today to be more like you, help us to look beyond the faults of others. Help us to be slow to condemned and quick to forgive. For those of us who are being condemned or have been condemned, strengthen us and help us to forgive.

Do Good and Good will Follow You

What an awesome and fulfilling feeling it is when you do something for someone who is in need; especially when you did it selflessly. It is even more awesome when the blessings come back to you because of what you did.

It can also be an awful feeling at times if the person you are doing it for is ungrateful or does not recognize the good that you are doing. Today’s scripture however, encourages us not to get tired of doing good. God will bless you at the right time, if you do not give up. I will us a story to further illustrate my point.

A woman baked bread for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra bread on the window sill, for whosoever would take it away. Every day, a hunchback came and took away the bread. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way:” The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!”

This went on, day after day. Every day, the hunchback came, picked up the bread and uttered the words: “The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The woman felt irritated. “Not a word of gratitude,” she said to herself… ” Every day this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean?”

One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. “I shall get rid of this hunchback,” she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the bread she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. “What is this I am doing?” she said.

Immediately, she threw the bread into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window sill. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the bread and muttered the words: ”The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman.

Every day, as the woman placed the bread on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him. She prayed for his safe return. That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway.

He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said,” Mom, it’s a miracle I’m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me whole Bread. As he gave it to me, he said, “This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!”

As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale. She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned bread that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! Mighty God, thank you for the opportunities that you have given us so that we might be able to bless others. Lord Jesus we pray that you will help us not to grow weary but to wait upon you for strength and for your reward. Forgive us Lord for the times when we gave up on others, because they did not appreciate what we did. Most of all Lord we want to thank you for giving to us and allowing others to give into our lives.

Responsibilities


Main Scripture:  ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.Matt 25:23 (NIV)

Have you sometimes wondered why you have not received the things that you have been asking God for? Maybe a promotion, maybe a child, maybe a husband, maybe a new job, may a position in the church.

Matthew 25:15-23 tells us a parable about a man who entrusted his servants with some gold until he returned. These men were rewarded according to how they caused the gold to increase.

One was given one bag, one was given two bags and one was given five. The ones who were given two and five bags went and put the money to work and doubled what they had, the one who was given one bag dug a hole and placed it in the ground. When the master came back he rewarded the ones who doubled the money but he took the money from the one with one bag and gave it to the one who originally had five bags.

Moral of the story is that if you are not faithful over what you are given, you will not be given more. Consider your job, do you go to work late, do you have a bad attitude, do you miss your deadlines? Well you will never be considered for a promotion because you are not dealing very well with the responsibilities you have been entrusted with.
What about church, you might have been told that you are called to be an evangelist, however you never go to bible class, you never get involved in the activities at church, and further to that you behave so pompous so no one is comfortable around you, as such the Pastor does not feel like he can entrust with such a responsibility.

Ladies this morning ponder if you have been handling those things that you have been entrusted with in an effective and responsible manner. Ask God to teach you and guide you; also seek help from others around who have trod the same path. Importantly too is to have the right attitude, remember at all times that “your attitude determines your altitude”

Lord, thank you for the responsibilities that you have entrusted us with, teach us to be faithful in all we do, giving it our best at all times. Help us to manage these things effectively and responsibly so that we will be entrusted with other things. Lord we give you thanks, honour and glory.
